A lot of great corporate social responsiblity (CSR) activities are coming out of SAPPHIRE China this week that are worth a post.

Urban transportation Management Platform for China

China is known for their traffic jams, especially the jam in August of 2012 that lasted 12 days! Forbes recorded this as the worst traffic jam in history. The jam in August was caused by too many cars clogging the roads.

SAP Labs China and the Research Institute of Highway Ministry of Transport (RIHMT) are working together to build a Taxi Information Management system to understand traffic situations, be able to analyze passenger flow and taxi operations. The crunching of 36 billion data records will help taxi drivers make decisions in real-time to avoid traffic jams and to be available when someone needs a lift. The platform is powered by SAP HANA and will be piloted in Beijing, Kunming, Chongqing and Tianjin.
